Dental Cleanings
Orange, CA Dentist

Woman smiling in dentist chair during a dental cleaning. Professional dental cleanings are also known as scaling and planing. These appointments are an important and necessary part of oral hygiene. It is recommended that you have a dental cleaning done twice every year. Cleanings are done to remove dental plaque from teeth, to prevent the occurrence of tooth decay, gingivitis, and other dental issues. It is expected that you do regular teeth cleaning at home every day by brushing and flossing regularly; however, you may not be able to reach all of the areas within your mouth. Our dental professionals offer deep cleanings to remove those hardened deposits not removed by regular cleaning. If you have dentures, we also offer denture cleaning. At Charlie Hsieh Dental Corporation, our dental team offers teeth cleaning to not only improve your dental hygiene overall but also prevent any unwanted dental problems in the long run.

The Advantages of Teeth Cleaning

Professional teeth cleanings are important because they help prevent dental issues, especially gum disease. Cleanings in our office enable our dental professionals to go under your gum line and remove harmful bacteria. This allows new gum tissue to form, which bonds to the tooth-inhabiting spaces that could allow for plaque to build up.

Cleaning Procedure

We begin the cleaning procedure with a physical exam of your entire mouth. This is to check for any diseases or issues such as gingivitis. The cleaning will be performed by our dental hygienist. Our dentist will perform the physical examination and give the okay on whether or not the cleaning procedure can be done.

Scaling and Planing

A cleaning procedure involves scaling and planing. Scaling helps remove tartar and plaque, while planing helps smooth the roots of the teeth. Root planing also aids the gums to reattach to the teeth. During scaling, the dentist will get rid of all hardened plaque below and above the gum, ensuring they reach down to the bottom of the gum pocket. In root planing, our dentist utilizes specialized tools to smooth the roots so that the gums can reattach. Both root planing and scaling may take several visits to our dental office before completion. They may also require you to have a local anesthetic. The dental hygienist will use a scaler to do away with all plaque and tartar around the gums and between the teeth, including the pockets. The more the tartar, the more time this should take.

After the tartar is removed, the teeth are brushed using a high-powered electric brush. This process eliminates any residue or leftover tartar. We use a paste similar to regular toothpaste but has a gritty consistency. The teeth are then flossed to eliminate any plaque and residue of the toothpaste that was used earlier in the process. Our dental hygienist will be able to spot any potential trouble places that may lead to bleeding. We then give you a rinse that contains some fluoride to get rid of any plaque that may have been missed. The fluoride will also strengthen your teeth.

The final step is usually the application of fluoride to strengthen the enamel. The fluoride liquid does come in different flavors and you can choose whichever you prefer. This aids in the prevention of cavities for the next several months. A foamy gel is then used that fits over your teeth and is left to sit. A thin layer of varnish is applied over your teeth that hardens after contact with saliva. After the cleaning, you can drink and eat almost immediately.

During your visit, our team may do other exams if needed. We advise that you come back for another cleaning, usually after six months. Follow-up appointments are also encouraged.
