Tooth Extractions

A bunch of happy teeth with one sad tooth being plucked out of a line. Extraction is a process that involves removing a tooth that has been damaged due to decay, injury, or an accident. The process entails pulling, or extracting, the tooth from the socket. Our dentist will remove the affected tooth without any damage to the adjacent teeth and gums. Tooth extractions serve many purposes and are intended for different goals. If you need teeth removal, our dentist at Charlie Hsieh Dental Corporation will extract your tooth safely and professionally.

Why Extract Your Teeth?

You may need to have a tooth extracted if it is causing crowding, and to help prepare the bite for orthodontia. Our dentist will recommend orthodontia to help properly align your teeth. Braces or other orthodontic correction may not be possible if you have teeth that are too big for your mouth. If a root is unable to break through the gum or erupt, you may need a tooth extraction to create room in the mouth to allow eruption. An infection, such as tooth decay or damaged pulp, can call for tooth extraction, especially if it is severe. If periodontal disease has caused your teeth to loosen, you may need to have them removed.

Procedure for Extractions

An extraction may be as simple as just pulling teeth out. Other times, it may require surgery. The dentist performs the tooth removal procedure, and if severe, an oral surgeon will be involved to perform surgery. The dentist uses anesthesia for the removal of the tooth. The first visit will include the dentist taking an X-ray before scheduling the surgery. You are required to inform the dentist of your medical history, such as medications you are taking, and allergies to drugs, or even any diseases you have. These can all affect your dental care.

After the Extraction

The dentist will recommend that you keep the area that has been operated on clean to prevent infections. Our dentist will give you sterile gauze to bite to limit bleeding so that clotting occurs and the healing takes place fast. The dentist will prescribe some medication to ease pain and discomfort. However, if you experience prolonged symptoms, we advise you to come to our office immediately.

Side Effects involved with Extraction

Tooth removal may have side effects. It can involve a few risks during tooth extraction. After the procedure, the sockets might be exposed because blood clotting has not occurred, leading to a dry socket condition. The dentist will put a sedative dressing to protect the area until clotting occurs. Other risks include excessive bleeding, vomiting, coughing, and chest pains. These side effects are rare and should subside after some time. Contact us if you experience any of these side effects.

Recovery period after Extraction

The recovery period takes a few days. You should apply an ice pack to the outer cheek in the area where the tooth was removed. Take pain medications as prescribed and eat soft foods to help prevent hurting the wound. Ensure you rest adequately to ease the recovery.

Does Tooth Extraction Hurt?

The dentist will administer local anesthesia before the operation to reduce any pain. After the procedure, the dentist usually recommends over-the-counter drugs to help manage any pain.
