Dental Fillings

3D rendering of a dental filling on a back tooth. A filling is a procedure of returning a decayed tooth to its normal state and function. A general dentist removes the decayed tooth, cleans the area affected, and then fills the cleaned cavity with filling materials. Fillings help to prevent further decay of the tooth. Materials used for filling teeth include gold, porcelain, composite resin, amalgam - often an alloy of silver, copper, tin, mercury, and zinc. Our dental team at Charlie Hsieh Dental Corporation will fill your teeth if you have cavities, holes in your teeth, or a broken tooth.

Types of Fillings

The type of fillings used are different and vary from one patient to another. The type of filling material used 0depends on the type of repair to be done. It also depends on whether you have specific allergies to certain materials used, and the location where the filling is to be placed in the mouth. Composite fillings are usually made to fit the color of the teeth. They are bonded naturally to the tooth. The part to be treated will be removed and then filled with a composite filling, whereby it hardens. Gold fillings are ordered directly from the laboratory then surfaced into place. Gold is usually well-tolerated by the gum tissues and lasts more than 20 years.

Fillings are helpful in patients with a high risk of tooth decay, for extensive tooth preparations, and where moisture may make it difficult for other materials to bond to the tooth. Our dentist also uses porcelain, and larger fillings called inlays or onlays. They are produced in the laboratory then bonded to the tooth. They match the color of the tooth and resist staining. Inlay and onlay fillings covers most of the tooth.

What happens when you get a Filling

When you get a filling, our dentist will remove the decay from the tooth, clean the affected area, and fill the cleaned portion using appropriate materials. A crown or cap may be recommended when the decayed portion of a tooth has been severely damaged. There are two ways of treating decay that has reached the nerve: root canal treatment and pulp procedure.

Filling Procedure

The process of filling cavities is pretty simple and straightforward. The filling procedure will take about an hour or so. Our dentist will take X-rays if need. The dentist will talk to you regarding the procedure and then complete the dental work. Prior to filling cavities, the dentist will numb your gums, teeth, and surrounding skin to help avoid any pain and discomfort during the procedure. Thereafter, the dentist will drill out the decay within the tooth, replacing it will a filling.

Your mouth will remain numb for a couple of hours, however, no significant risks occur with filling cavities. The main reason patients receive fillings is to fill a cavity; however, fillings may also be used when repairing damage to teeth as a result of bruxism or teeth grinding. Fillings can also be used to replace parts of broken teeth.

Benefits of Fillings

The insertion of tooth fillings is one of the most commonly performed procedures by our dentists. A filling helps prevent bacteria from building up in the affected area and shielding your teeth from further decay. It also improves the color and structure of the teeth.
